6 Study Tips For College Kids (And Other Busy People)

Hey there everyone! As a current college student, sometimes I feel like my life is totally consumed by my classes and schoolwork. Nursing requires hours of studying from the textbook every night, and it can get really overwhelming. So I wanted to share with you some of my tips for successful studying and keeping the stress levels controlled. I think that these tips work not only for college kids, but for busy bloggers as well! Read on for more!

college4

1. Use Your Resources.

Tutors aren’t just there to look pretty-they’re there to help you succeed! Same with your professors. Their job is to help you learn, so take advantage of that and go to office and tutoring hours to review any questions you might have and stay on top of your work.

college2

2. Set aside a specific time to study each day.

It’s hard to make study time a priority in college with so many time demands from friends, clubs, and work. Make sure to set aside a specific time every day to study, so that you get into a routine and get used to doing it each day.

3. Put away distractions.

Turn that phone off and put it where you can’t see it. Out of sight, out of mind! If you don’t need it to study, put your computer away and just focus on the textbook or notes you took. Which brings us to number 4-

college5

4. Take good notes.

Taking notes might seem time consuming and difficult while in class, but they’re so helpful to look back on and connect the material from the textbook to what your professor is saying. Studies have shown that if you don’t take notes, 60% of what you hear in class is forgotten after just 9 hours- yikes! Avoid this by reviewing and rewriting your notes after class to help you retain the information.

5. Eat Healthy Snacks.

Snacking is something all of us do, but when you’re stressed and studying it’s too easy to sit down with a new bag of chips and find it’s empty an hour later! Stock up on healthier snacks like blueberries, yogurt, and almonds that contain brain-boosting compounds (and taste delicious too).

college6

6. Leave time for yourself.

Sure, studying is really important. And you’re in college to learn. But breaks are important too; they give your brain time to recharge and help you do better in the long run. Take a 15 minute break for every hour of studying, and you’ll find yourself much less stressed than trying to do all of it at once. Grab dinner with friends or binge-watch some Netflix (I recommend Once Upon A Time 😉 ). It won’t kill you or your GPA to take a break every once in a while!

I targeted this post towards college kids like me, but I think these tips can be applied to blog work as well! What do you think? What study strategies do you use? Let me know in the comments! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

Add A Bit Of Whimsy (Giveaway with CaseApp)

My friends are always telling me that my decorating style is like a scrapbook. I have stickers all over my water bottles, my walls are covered in a mixture of posters and tapestries, and I wear two or three necklaces at once. I love to add some touches of whimsy to my life. So a few weeks ago, when a website called CaseApp reached out to me about a collaboration, I was intrigued. They let you design your own custom phone cases, as well as laptop cases and decals! I loved the idea of adding some whimsical flair into my life via my electronics.

I love the products I received, but the best part is that I got to design them myself. I’m super excited to be giving away a $40 USD value online code to one lucky winner! Scroll down to see more, and to enter the giveaway!

caseapp1

First up, this MacBook decal! I made a mistake when designing this: I accidentally designed this for an 11-inch Macbook Air, when the computer that I actually have is a 13-inch MacBook Air. Oops! No big deal though, I actually don’t mind that it’s a little too small, I think the border looks cool. But if you’re getting this, make sure you double-check how big your computer is! The decal is made of a really nice heavy-duty vinyl, and definitely protects from scratches and other superficial damage. I used a stock photo and added a quote, but you can use literally any picture to design your own decal or case!

caseapp3

I also designed this iPhone case! I happen to have an iPhone 6, but they can make cases for quite a few different types of phones, including Androids and old iPhone models. Similarly, the computer aren’t limited to only MacBooks either! I got the solid case, and while it isn’t very heavy duty, I would recommend it if you’re not as clumsy with your phone and like to change up its look. Again, you can use any picture, and even add their little doodles like I did! I picked this stock photo of Big Ben and then added this cute little rain cloud raining diamonds.

Overall, I really like these products! I think it’s awesome how you can design them to your specific tastes. If you prefer a more minimalistic version to my scrapbookish style, you can make it exactly how you would like!

I’m going to be giving away an online code worth $40 to CaseApp. You can use this code to design anything you’d like! Just click on the link below, then follow the instructions to enter-it’s super easy! The only required fields are to comment on this post and follow on Twitter. The winner will be notified by email the day the giveaway closes, November 6. Good luck to all!

I also have a discount code to share with all of you! It’s valid for the next week at CaseApp. Use the code COLORME20 to get 20% off your order! If you need some inspiration, check out CaseApp’s Instagram or Facebook.

Prairie Chic (with eShakti)

As you guys may have noticed, I hardly ever wear pants. Most of my wardrobe consists of dresses and skirts, so when eShakti reached out to me to collaborate and asked me to pick a piece out to review, of course it was going to be a dress. I picked out this floral navy number, and I’m in love with it!

eshakti2

I chose this dress because of the pretty print and the sheer sleeves, but online it looked shorter than it is. When it came I was surprised, but I actually think I like the longer length now that I’m used to it. My housemate said it looked “prairie chic”, like I’m from the Old West haha. eShakti gives you the option to customize your order in a lot of ways, including length, neckline, and even sleeve type, but I liked the dress as it was! It has a drawstring neck featuring a cutout, and it came with pockets, which is always a plus 🙂eshakti6eshakti7eshakti4eshakti9eshakti3eshakti10eshakti5

I added my tan booties and a silver cuff to add to the prairie/boho vibe I was feeling in this dress. This is definitely a dress I’m going to be wearing a lot this winter, the longer length and sleeves make it warm and comfy.

eshakti11

Overall I was very impressed with eShakti! I’m often wary of buying dresses online, but the size I ordered fit perfectly, and if you’re worried about fit, you can put in your measurements and customize the fit to your body! Like I mentioned before, you can also change the sleeves, neckline, length, and other aspects of the dress so you’re getting something uniquely yours! You can check out eShakti here, or on their Facebook, Pinterest, or Instagram.

What do you think? Have you tried eShakti? How do you feel about buying clothes online? If you’d like to see more shots from this shoot, follow along on Instagram-I’m always looking for new bloggers to follow! Let me know what you think in the comments! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

Hunter Mountain

TGIF, guys! This week has been insane, I’m deeply in need of some R&R lately. School and classes are really catching up with me, I think I feel a spa day coming on! Thankfully last weekend I actually did end up doing something relaxing. I took a quick road-trip from my college to the Woodstock area of New York, in the Catskills, and took a hike up Hunter Mountain!

It was a beautiful fall day out, and the leaves were just starting to turn. My boyfriend is from the area, so we stopped by his house and picked up his dog to take with us! He loved the hike 🙂

hunter1

hunter2

hunter6

The trail was about 3.8 miles from our base start point to the peak, and much of it was very steep. If you’re new to hiking, I wouldn’t recommend this one- it was basically straight up the whole way! However if you’re an outdoorsy type, this is definitely a trek worth making; the views are absolutely gorgeous. Sturdy shoes are necessary, the trail is very rocky and it’s extremely easy to twist an ankle: I came pretty close a few times! Choose boots with ankle support, and a stick or pole to help you out on the descent isn’t a bad idea either. My boots are Oboz Sawtooths, and you can find them here.

hunter3  hunter4

There’s a fire tower on top of Hunter Mountain that is open to climb most of the year, and if you climb to the top you can see literally for miles and miles! Here are some shots of the gorgeous autumnal views. You can see the Catskill mountains until they meet the sky! hunter10

The firetower and cabin area are maintained by weekend volunteers from the area! They stay in this small cabin and help hikers that come through.

hunter9

This peak is over 4,000 feet, and the trail we chose was 3.8 miles. We (and the dog!) completed it in just under 2 hours. It was such a beautiful day for a hike, and it felt amazing to make the most of the last few nice outdoor days! Overall, I definitely recommend Hunter Mountain to anyone looking for a fun yet challenging weekend hike. For more pictures from it, check out my Instagram! I’m looking for new bloggers to follow 🙂

Also, to those of you paying attention 😉 I’ve chopped my hair off again! I took about 6 inches off, and it just skims my chin now! It was a pretty spur of the moment decision, but it’ll grow back haha. I’m really liking it!

What have you been up to lately? Any fun outdoor adventures? Made any spur of the moment beauty decisions? Let me know in the comments! Thanks for stopping by! 🙂

September Favorites

sepfaves1

Happy Tuesday! I hope your week started off right. Today I want to share with you what I’ve been loving this month! It’s been an insanely busy month so far, but I’ve still found time for a few fun things!
septfaves3

septfaves2

First up: my latest favorite book! The Rise and Fall of the Gallivanters by M. J. Beaufrand is set in the 80s in Portland, Oregon. It follows a punk band and its lead singer, Noah, through the ups and downs of life. It’s a gritty, emotional, and amazingly descriptive story that will make you cry and want to shave your hair into a mohawk! You can grab a copy here.

septfaves4

Next up is something that had been on my wishlist forever: the Instax Fujifilm mini polaroid camera! It’s so cute, and I haven’t had trouble making the photos turn out great so far! It’s definitely my favorite of my favorites this month 🙂 To see how it does, check out my Instagram! I’m always looking for new bloggers to follow 🙂 You can pick yourself up one of these by clicking here!

septfaves5

I’ve also been loving nude and light pink lip colors lately; as sassy and bold that perfect dark fall lip is, it takes a lot of effort in the morning! I love these colors because they still provide a fun look, but are much easier to just swipe on. My 3 favorites are Milani Color Statement in Dulce Carmelo, Wet n Wild MegaLast in Dark Pink Frost, and Trestique Matte Lip Crayon in Nantucket Nude. (See the Nantucket Nude Shade reviewed here!)

I love this marsala leather jacket for fall! Its burgundy tones complement my wardrobe perfectly, and it really puts me in a fall mood! It was a great budget purchase too, at just $28 from Forever21. You can see it featured in an OOTD here! It’s no longer available in this wine color, but you can pick it up in black or beige, and the best part is that it’s currently on sale for just $21! Grab one here.

Ramblings and Retro Vibes

babydoll2

Hey guys, happy Friday! Here’s to the weekend! It’s been a crazy busy couple of weeks now that I’m back at school, and it’s only going to get worse I think! I’m starting nursing clinicals, have a full course load, have a work study job, am a member of an insane ELEVEN school clubs, and am somehow still running this blog and making time for friends. I’m stressed, but I don’t really mind; I think I thrive on being busy. Not to say I don’t love vacation time, but keeping to a schedule really makes me feel productive somehow. But let’s talk about this outfit!

Today’s outfit of the day features some of my favorite fall staples: dresses, fringe, booties, and knee-high socks! I picked up this open-back babydoll dress from Forever21 the other week and I love it so much! It’s such an easy piece to throw on on a busy morning. I added all-black accessories like this scarf, these knee socks, and booties in order to not overwhelm the outfit, and topped it off with my favorite statement necklace and a swipe of bold lipstick.

babydoll3

 babydoll1

I feel very 70’s retro-chic in this outfit, I think mostly due to the fringe, the suede booties and the layers. Those things are perfect for fall too though, and I’ve never been one to hold back from a retro look!

I’ve also discovered I really need a new camera; my little digital one is just not cutting it anymore. I’ve decided I have to save up and get myself something really nice for my travel, hiking, and blog photos. The problem is, I don’t know what to get! What type of camera do you guys use? Any recommendations?

Do you thrive on schedules too or do you do better with a more laid-back pace? What are your favorite fall staples? Let me know in the comments! Thanks for stopping by!

My Fall Drugstore Makeup Picks

drugfall1

As fall quickly approaches, I think it’s time to begin switching over my makeup collection! Just like you change wardrobes as the seasons change, I change the contents of my makeup bag. However, I’m a broke college student who doesn’t have much spare cash to spend on makeup sadly. So here are my top makeup choices for fall that don’t break the bank-in fact, all of these are less than $4 each!

drugfall2

I told you in my August Favorites post how much I’ve been loving baked eyeshadows lately! This one from Jordana Cosmetics in Bronze Gala is such a gorgeously bold metallic, and fall is all about those metallics! I use this wet for a bold look, but you can also use it dry for something softer. Bronze Gala Eyeshadow, $2.49

This blush is also from Jordana, and I picked it up in the shade Redwood. I think darker blushes are the way to go for fall, because they give you that chilly air flush. This product is satiny with just a little shimmer. Find it here for $2.99! It comes in a few dozen other colors as well.

drugfall3

A red statement lip is classic fall makeup, of course. I’ve been loving chunky lip pencils lately, and this LA Colors one is a great way to rock that fall lip! It’s somewhat sheer, but can be layered to give the appearance of a stain.

drugfall4

And of course, since fall weather is so drying on the lips and skin, I always have a few of these Baby Lips chapsticks lying around! You can get them in tinted, sheer, and SPF 15 varieties for just $3.99 each from Maybelline! This is one of my favorite brands, I’ve got a couple in every purse! Find them here.

Short Hair, Short Skirt, Don’t Care

     I hate being professional.

shorthair1

I think that fashion shouldn’t be restricted. I hate dress codes in any form. I feel that restricting what I can wear is like restricting my freedom of speech. Fashion is art. I will use my fashion as graffiti if I want to- bold, larger than life, full color six stories high!

shorthair4

But I totally get why we need dress codes. We have to have some semblance of professionalism in the workplace, in the classroom, in order to properly represent the institution I attend.

shorthair2

As a nursing student, I’m constantly followed by dress codes. Nothing too short, no crop tops, closed-toed shoes only. No dyed hair, no fake nails, no nail polish. No shorts, no jeans, nothing low cut. Nothing fun!! I feel like I’m being stifled and strangled!

shorthair5

So here is an outfit that’s totally inappropriate for class, work, and anywhere else I have to be, featuring a crop top and a too-short skirt. Fashion is the best form of self-expression; it’s the one that everyone everywhere takes part in every day.

shorthair3

On another note, I cut my hair and I’m loving it! I took off about 8 inches, which is the most I’ve ever done! It was time for a change 🙂

shorthair6

The top I’m wearing in this post is featured in Back To School Haul, while my ankle booties can be seen again in my August Favorites post.

What do you think? How do you feel about dress codes? Let me know in the comments! Thanks for stopping by 🙂

August Favorites

I hope everyone’s been having a good month! Tomorrow I start my second year of college. I’m so glad to finally be back on campus, but I’m not quite ready to start actually going to class again…waking up at 6:30 is not my favorite thing in the world, I’m pretty much the opposite of a morning person. Anyway, here’s what I’ve been loving this month!

 augfaves2

First up, pretty stationery! I’m the kind of person that would be totally lost without a good planner. This one is from Staples and has both a monthly and daily view. I also have this adorable world map notebook! Pretty stationery is one of my favorite vices. You can find this planner here!

 augfaves3

My current makeup obsession is baked eyeshadows. I picked these up from Sally Beauty supply for just $1 each just to test them out. Of course, they’re not the best quality, but I’ve really loving the great neutral metallic shades, and they do well worn wet with a primer underneath. I’ve been loving this BellaPierre lipstick as well! I received it in a previous Ipsy bag, but didn’t get around to testing it until recently. It’s extremely pigmented, and I’m really loving wearing it this summer. You can find it here for $19.99!

augfaves4

These boots. I could wax poetic about how much I love these boots for hours. They’re the perfect height, have an awesome chunky heel, and go without absolutely everything! Stay tuned for an outfit featuring them soon! I can’t wait to wear them when the weather gets a bit colder. I found them at Forever21, and though they aren’t available in black anymore, you can grab them in maroon or cognac here!

Denim Shift Dress

shift10

Hello everyone, and happy Wednesday! I hope wherever you are is cooler than here; temperatures are off the charts and all I want to do is spend all day in the pool with a cold smoothie!
Today was another oppressively hot one, so I thought it was the perfect day to show you guys this sleeveless denim shift dress! You may remember it from my Back To School Haul the other day. It’s my favorite piece lately! It’s so swingy and cool, and just so easy to wear. I paired it with my favorite oxfords, a bronze necklace, and this lovely little coin purse for some fun vintage vibes.

I threw my hair up to get it off my neck, and added a simple winged eyeliner look. Aren’t the mountains just gorgeous here in Vermont? I love the summer scenery!
